Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Becker College, 17-5
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Carpenter (Vernon, Conn.) notched nine saves including six in the second half, but Becker College used five goals each from Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, Conn.) to help the Hawks stake a 17-5 victory in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms moves to 2-7 on the season, 0-1 in NECC action, while Becker improves to 6-3 overall, 1-0 in league play.
In the first period, Boucher netted the first goal at the 27:29 mark before Elms' sophomore attacker Jillian Pirog (Ludlow, Mass.) knotted the game at 1-1 just 1:05 later.
The Hawks then strung together 11 straight goals highlighted by four strikes from Mossey, three goals from Boucher, a pair of markers from Tatum Fahs (Foster, R.I.) and one each from Alyssa Bond (Thompson, Conn.) and Rachel Welling (Charlestown, N.H.) to give Becker a 12-1 lead with 5:53 to play in the first stanza.
The Blazers' found the back of the net for the second time with 59 seconds remaining when junior midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) notched a tally, but the Hawks closed out the half with a goal by Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J.) with 47 seconds left to set the halftime score at 13-2.
In the second stanza, the Blazers used two more strikes from Narey and one from junior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.). Becker added second-half markers from Mossey, Dilkes, Boucher and Bond to cap the 17-5 victory.
Welling added a pair of assists and joined Victoria Belcher (Seekonk, Mass.), Mossey and Jaqueline Chila (Monroe, Conn.) with two groundballs. Shelby Wicks (Shaftsbury, Vt.) made nine saves in the winning effort, while Mossey led all players with six draw controls.
Narey and freshman defender Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led the Blazers with five draw controls each, while sophomore attacker Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman attacker Sabrina Pereira (South Windsor, Conn.) added three groundballs each.
Elms returns to non-league action on Thursday, April 10 when it hosts Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 8:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
