MEN'S SOCCER NIPS NEWBURY, 2-1
CHESTNUT HILL, MA, Oct. 11, 2008 - Elms College junior midfielder Damien Robinson (Chicopee, MA) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 51st minute and freshman goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, MA) stopped nine shots to help the Blazers defeat Newbury 2-1 in Saturday's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Pine Manor College.
With the win, Elms College snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 4-8 overall, 1-3 NECC. Newbury fell to 3-12, 1-3 NECC.
Sophomore defender Courtney Johnson (Belchertown, MA) netted his first goal of the year just 6:30 into the game to give the Blazers a quick 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting the Blazers 12-6 in the first half, Newbury still trailed 1-0 early in the second half until freshman midfielder Anthony Fannoh III (Worcester, MA) scored to tie game at 1-1.
Robinson answered for the Blazers just 37 seconds later when he deflected freshman midfielder Alex Rosario's (Chicopee, MA) pass past the Newbury keeper for what stood as the game-winner.
For the game, Newbury held advantages in both shots (24-16) and corner kicks (10-3).
Elms College returns to non-conference play on Tuesday, October 14 at Amherst. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
