CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore forward Ziggy Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) tied the game in the 67th minute, but Newbury College's Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to help lift the Nighthawks to a thrilling 2-1 win in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the loss Elms falls to 2-5 overall, 0-1 in NECC action, while Newbury improves to 1-4 overall, 1-0 in league play.
The Nighthawks struck first midway through the first half when Rodriguez Pierre (Somerville, Mass.) broke through the Elms defense in the 26th minute, and scored the lone goal of the first half.
At the 66:49 mark of the second frame, Jonathan broke into the clear in front of the net and tucked the ball into the corner of the net erasing Elms' 1-0 deficit to even the game 1-1.
The game remained tied until the 82nd minute of play when Newbury's Hector Abudoj (Tegucigalpa, Hondoras) delivered a through ball to Moosavizadeh who capitalized with what stood as the game-winning goal.
Blazers' senior goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) stopped three balls in the losing effort, while junior midfielder Tavish Leland (Bridgton, Maine) added a pair of headers on goal.
Nighthawks' goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) saved three shots to seal the victory.
