NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Elms College Women's Basketball traveled to Albertus Magnus College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup Wednesday evening.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 69 | Albertus Magnus College 90
Records: Blazers 6-12, 3-4 (GNAC) | Falcons 11-8, 6-2 (GNAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Albertus would take the lead early, 8-0, until sophomore guard Jade Lewis (Orlando, Fla.) would make one out of two free throw attempts after being fouled. After Albertus puts more points on the board, Lewis gets fouled again, and makes one free throw out of two. The Falcons foul the Blazers again, but this time it was junior guard Kelly LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) and she would make one out of two free throw attempts. Then, after Elms was able to get an offensive possession, it gave junior forward Jenny Gorski (Vernon, Conn.) the opportunity to make a layup that was assisted by first year forward/center Mary Turco (Winthrop, Mass.). Albertus tried to get another point on the board, but graduate student guard Rahmia Johnston (Newton, Conn.) got a defensive rebound and passed it to Gorski, who was about to make a jump shot. The Falcons were able to get another point, but Gorski made a defensive rebound. Turco tried to make a layup, but instead got a rebound and tipped the ball in. After Albertus turned over the ball, Johnston made a layup, which closed the gap between the two teams. Junior forward Talia Uribe (South Hadley, Mass.) would steal the ball from the Falcons and Johnston made a layup because of it. Before the end of the first quarter, Johnston was able to make one last layup, making the score 20-15 Albertus. At the start of the second quarter we would see a different narrative, where Elms would put up the first points of the quarter. This happened because Gorski was able to make a defensive rebound and pass it to Lewis who made a layup. Albertus fouled Elms and the Blazers would capitalize with two free throws made by Lewis. Then, Johnston and Uribe would both make a layup adding two more points to the board for the Blazers. Johnston would get another defensive rebound for Elms and pass it to Uribe who made a layup. Uribe would make another layup after Albertus put two more points on the board. The Falcons would turnover the ball, which gave Turco the opportunity to make a layup, which was assisted by Johnston. The Blazers were able to get an offensive rebound which helped Lewis make a three point jump shot that was assisted by junior guard Piper Graham (Lancaster, Penn.). After Albertus put up more points, they would foul Elms again, and Johnston would make both free throw attempts. Unfortunately, those would be the last points the Blazers were put up in the second quarter. At the end of the first half, Elms would be behind Albertus, 47-34.
At the start of the third quarter, we would see a similar narrative to the first half, where Albertus would put the first points on the board. However, Elms would answer back quickly with a three point jump shot made by Lewis, which was assisted by Johnston. After the ball went back and forth, Johnston was able to put up a layup. Then, after the Falcons put up more puts, Turco was able to make a defensive rebound, which gave sophomore guard/forward Shea Barron (Wallingford, Conn.) the opportunity to make a three point jump shot that was assisted by Johnston. After more back and forth, Albertus fouls Elms again and Uribe was able to make both free throw attempts. Then Lewis was able to make a layup, assisted by Gorski. Albertus would foul Elms again, and Lewis would make one out of the two free throw attempts. Those would be the last points the Blazers would make in the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter, the Falcons would still hold the lead, 72-47. At the start of the fourth quarter, Albertus would foul Elms again, and Johnston would capitalize and make both free throw attempts. After an offensive rebound made by Turco, Turco would tip the ball in to get another two points for the Blazers. After another foul, Turco would make one free throw out of the two attempts. After back and forth possession, the Falcons again would foul the Blazers and Turco would step up to the line and make both free throw attempts. After Johnston stole the ball, once again, a foul occurred and Turco would make both attempts for the free throws. Then Shea, would make a three point jump shot, which was followed by a layup made by Turco and a free throw. Johnston would get another defensive rebound and would pass the ball to Gorski, who would make a jump shot. Albertus fouled Elms again, and Turco would once again make both attempts. Gorski would make a layup for the Blazers. The Blazers would end the quarter with another free throw attempt and first year guard Mia Pacheco (Somerville, Mass.) would make one out of two attempts. Unfortunately, Elms would fall short and Albertus would take home the win, 90-69.
