Western New England Edges Women's Swimming

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Elms College women's swimming squad was edged out by host Western New England University in a dual meet at the Alumni Healthful Living Center Pool Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) registered a pair of first-place finishes, touching the wall first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:36.74) and the 500 yard freestyle (6:04.24), along with a second-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (1:11.58). Junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) claimed first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:13.40) with a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (28.64) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:23.07). Freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) won the 100 yard backstroke (1:11.48), with second-place in the 50 yard backstroke (33.69) and the 50 yard butterfly (33.56). Sophomore Desiree Milar (Springfield, Mass.) recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 yard breaststroke (37.28) and the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.50). Senior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) grabbed second in the 100 yard freestyle (13:27.24), while senior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) took second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:58.59). Freshman Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) posted second-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (29.91) and the 50 yard breaststroke (39.12). Sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) was fourth in the 50 yard backstroke (37.60), and sophomore Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) placed fifth in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:13.91. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the squad of Carrier, Gordon, Milar and Scianna won the event with a time of 1:53.83, while the team of Carterud, Milar, Obando and Given placed second in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:19.57.

The Blazers will return to the pool when they host Norwich University in a dual meet at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
