Bashaw Named Head Baseball Coach

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College Athletic Director Louise McCleary recently announced that Nathan Bashaw has been named the athletic department's head baseball coach and intramurals coordinator.

"I am very excited to accept the position and help build the program," Coach Bashaw said. "I look forward to putting together a competitive team that can work towards a conference championship."

Coach Bashaw has spent the last five years at Gettysburg College working in various areas of the athletics department. He was first hired as the Director of Campus Recreation and was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics in November of 2009. Since joining the Gettysburg staff in 2005, he also served as the assistant baseball coach.  

"We are thrilled to have Nathan join our staff," McCleary stated. "He has an extensive baseball resume that includes coaching and playing that will be a good fit for our program. He also has a tremendous amount of experience running an intramural program. I know he will continue to move our baseball program forward."

A 2003 graduate of Gettysburg, Coach Bashaw served on the baseball staff at Dickinson College from 2003-2005 before returning to his alma mater.  While at Gettysburg, Coach Bashaw's baseball duties were primarily centered on catchers and hitters but also included assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program including the scheduling of practices, pregame routines, recruiting and the coordination of fall showcase clinics. In 2007, Coach Bashaw helped the Bullets post the program's second highest win total in a season (26) and directed the team to two Centennial Conference postseason appearances.

Originally hired as a campus recreation graduate assistant, Coach Bashaw was promoted to Director of Campus Recreation in October of 2005 and was then named Assistant Director of Athletics in November of 2009. As the Assistant Director of Athletics, Coach Bashaw was responsible for the administration of a campus-wide recreation and fitness program, intramurals, club sports , aerobic classes and managing The Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness. As the Director of Campus Recreation, he was in charge of recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating every aspect of the campus recreation program.   

As a student at Gettysburg, Coach Bashaw was a four-year letter-winner and a three-year starter in the middle infield on Gettysburg's baseball team from 2000-03. Serving as a team captain as a senior, he earned All-Centennial Conference accolades at shortstop after hitting .341 and finishing in the top 10 in the league in hits and runs scored. Coach Bashaw set a school record with 101 assists as a junior and finished his career with a .310 batting average, 81 runs scored, 126 hits and 62 RBI.

Coach Bashaw earned a bachelor's degree in classical studies with a minor in mathematics from Gettysburg and later earned a master's in exercise science and physical education with an emphasis in administration from McDaniel College.
