Late Goal Lifts Newbury Over Mens Soccer, 3-2
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Elms College junior forward
Sean Moylan (Chicopee, Mass.) netted the
equalizing goal at the 56:57 mark of the second half but a score
from Newbury College's Marc Jean-Jacques(Franklin
Square, N.Y.) in the 89th minute lifted the
Nighthawks to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Blazers in Satuday
afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opening
men's soccer game for both teams at Pine Manor College.
With the loss, Elms falls to 0-6-1 overall, 0-1 in NECC play, while Newbury improves to 1-4 on the season, 1-0 in league action.
Six minutes into the game, Newbury hit its stride as Shaundize Moosavizad (Winchester, Mass.) corralled a pass from Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, R.I.) and scored a breakaway goal to put the Nighthawks up 1-0.
Elms responded five minutes later when senior defender Jon D'Amours (Chicopee, Mass.) controlled a corner kick service from Moylan and knocked the ball into the back of the net to even the contest at one goal apiece.
Newbury extended its lead to 2-1 when Tim Chatigny (Pelham, Mass.) sent a cross from the left side of the field to Moosavizad who finished the play with his second goal of the game at the 19:54 mark.
Moylan delivered the equalizer when freshman midfielder Nzigamasa Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) tapped a pass to Moylan who blasted the strike from 18 yards out to knot the game at 2-2.
The Nighthawks found the winning touch when Nicholas Cataldo (Walpole, Mass.) sent a pass to the foot of Jean-Jacques who tapped the ball into the net for the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.
Despite the loss, the Blazers outshot Newbury 18-9 with 10 of those shots on net. Nighthawks' goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) earned the victory with eight saves.
Elms returns to action on Monday, Sept. 29 when it hosts Springfield College in a non-conference contest at 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
