Double Overtime Goal Lifts Becker College Past Men’s Soccer, 1-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) collected 10 saves, but a score in the 106th minute of play by Becker College's Matheaus Souza (Framingham, Mass.) gave the Hawks a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms falls to 1-11-2, 0-4-1 in NECC action, while Becker improves to 8-5-1 on the season, 3-1 in league play.

Six minutes into the second overtime period, Ryan Singh (Elmont, N.Y.) delivered a through ball from midfield to Souza who was bolting up the middle of the field. Souza controlled the pass and pushed his shot just to the left of Sullivan giving Becker the 1-0 victory in the contest.

The sides played a tightly contested game through all of regulation and the first period and a half of extra time as the Hawks fired 11 shots on goal against Elms' seven for the contest

Both teams had opportunities to score early but stellar goalkeeping from Sullivan and Becker's Tim McDonald (Holden, Mass.) kept the game at a 0-0 deadlock.

Sullivan finished with five of his 10 saves in the second half, while McDonald stopped a total of seven shots  on the day.

Senior defenders Josh Chagnon (Loudon, N.H.) and Jon D'Amours  (Chicopee, Mass.) were a solid presence in the defensive third of the field for the Blazers, while freshman defender Brendan Reed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) managed two shots.

Elms' junior forward Sean Moylan (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman forward Nzigamasa Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) fired three shots on goal each while freshman midfielder Bryan Davey (Palmer, Mass.) added a shot on target in the loss.

Souza, Singh, Aldo Karkanjozi (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and Steve Araujo (Westport, Mass.) had impressive games for Becker, tallying two shots on net apiece to help secure the victory.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Monday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Rivier College. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
