HENNIKER, N.H. – The Elms College men's soccer suffered a heart-breaking defeat in a road match at New England College, falling in double overtime to the Pilgrims, 2-1, at Don Melander Field Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers captured an initial lead over the Pilgrims in the 12th minute as freshman midfielder CJ Dibkowski (Bristol, Conn.) connected with freshman forward Bobby Zaino (Avon, Conn.), who fired a shot past Pilgrims sophomore goalkeeper Tenzin Khenrab, to give Elms a 1-0 lead.
A miscue from the Blazers put New England College back in the game as an own goal from Elms knotted the game at 1-1 with 2:33 left in the first half. The teams battled back-and-forth in the second half, but neither squad could find the back of the net, sending the contest into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the teams headed to a final 10-minute extra period. With six minutes to play, sophomore midfielder Rizy Misiri played a ball between a pair of Elms defenders to senior forward Sebastian Andersson, who placed a shot past Blazers junior goalkeeper Nick Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica), to give New England College the 2-1 overtime win.
The Pilgrims outshot the Blazers, 17-12, during the overtime affair. Pennant stopped seven shots for Elms, while Khenrab made seven saves for New England College.
The Blazers dipped to 1-3-2 on the 2014 campaign, while New England College improved to 3-2 overall. Elms will return to the pitch in a road match at Johnson & Wales Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Atheltic Complex.
