DeVaux Tabbed Elms College 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee

DeVaux Tabbed Elms College 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College Athletic Department is pleased to announce Evelyn DeVaux (Wethersfield, CT) as the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year Honoree.

The NCAA Woman of the Year program was established in 1991 and honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athletes from all three divisions. To be eligible, a nominee must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and must have earned her undergraduate degree by summer 2021 (or demonstrate that she would have earned her degree if not for the COVID-19 pandemic).

Eligible female student-athletes are nominated by their member school. Each conference office then reviews the nominations from its core member schools (and sponsored sports) and submits its conference nominee(s) to the NCAA. All nominees who compete in a sport that is not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be sent to a separate pool to be considered by a committee. Then, the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee identifies the Top 30 – 10 from each division – and from there selects three finalists from each division. From the nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then selects the NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.

Evie's athletic achievements include, 4-year starter, major contributor to the NECC Championship team her freshman year, All NECC Second Team her sophomore year, 20 total points, with 5 goals, 10 assists and 23 defensive saves. Evie's 11 defensive saves in a season is tied for the record. She also has earned multiple defensive player of the year team awards. Evie was a Co-Captain for the 2020-2021 season and truly embraced her role, not only with the leadership skills she already had, but continuing to be a student of leadership.

Academically, Evie has a 3.56 cumulative GPA, has earned Dean's List multiple times and received the NFHCA All-Academic Squad award all 4 years.

Outside of athletics and academics she embodies Elms missions and core values; faith, community, justice and excellence. She has embedded herself in the Elms Community, being a SAAC rep member, Vice President, President of SAAC her senior year. In addition, she was an RA on campus, and worked in athletics as an SID intern. She strives to help make this campus a better place and puts in all her effort towards achieving excellence. Just about every day this year she was in the weight room working hard to get better. Lastly, Evie's love for field hockey, her team, and Elms athletics has been an inspiration for her teammates and coaches. From what I have seen as well, inspiration for other teammates and coaches too. Evie will be greatly missed, but as an athlete, a coach, and part of the Elms Ahletic Department, we could not be more proud.
