Records: Blazers 2-7, 0-0 (GNAC) | Lyons 2-8, 0-0 (NEWMCAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount Holyoke would take the early advantage, scoring two baskets to start the game. Sophomore forward/center Mary Turco (Winthrop, Mass.) would block a layup, but the Lyons would add four more points to their lead. Junior forward Tatiana Pereira (Providence, R.I.) would block a layup and would find an open first year guard Malinna Figueroa (Waterbury, Conn.) for a three-point shot, but MHC would answer back with a layup to take a 10-3 lead. As the opening quarter continued, Pereira would add a pair of steals, first year guard Sanaii Diaz (Worcester, Mass.) would make both of her free throw shots, senior forward/center Talia Uribe (South Hadley, Mass.) would drive her way to the basket for a layup, and sophomore guard Gabby Wasiewicz (Worcester, Mass.) would sink a three-point shot after receiving a pass from Figueroa to help Elms get to ten points, but the Lyons would add five more points to their lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would see the two intrastate foes trading possession early, with Wasiewicz making a steal, but Mount Holyoke would be the first to score two minutes into the quarter. The Blazers would try to gain some offensive momentum with the assistance from a pair of layups, tip-in, and a steal from Turco, Diaz adding a layup, a jump shot by Pereira, and layup from Uribe, but the Lyons would go into the halftime break with a 33-22 lead.
The third quarter would start by both teams trading blows early, with Turco making a layup followed by a MHC layup. The opposing sides would continue to trade possession, until Uribe would draw a foul and make one of her free throw attempts. The Lyons would then add eight points to their lead, but Elms would create some momentum with the help from a jump shot from Diaz and a steal by Turco where she would draw a foul and make both of her free throws. Soon thereafter, Turco would find an open Diaz for a three-point shot, but Mount Holyoke would continue to keep their lead, 47-32, at the end of the third quarter. The Lyons would start the fourth quarter with possession, but Figueroa would make a steal to try to get the Blazers back into the game. After a successful basket from MHC, Turco would add a steal which would lead to Figueroa making a tip-in then a steal by Diaz moments later. After the two teams would fail to score, Elms would gain possession and Wasiewicz would then connect a pass to Turco for a jump shot, followed by Wasiewicz sinking a three-point shot after receiving a pass from Uribe, to cut the deficit to ten points. The Blazers would continue to create some momentum when Turco would make a block and Wasiewicz would make another three-pointer, assisted by first year guard Aniah Glover (West Haven, Conn.), to bring the score to 49-42, but the Lyons would make their next basket to bring the score differential to nine-points. Elms would continue their efforts to bring the score closer, when Wasiewicz would rebound her own shot attempt and make a tip-in and senior guard Piper Graham (Lancaster, Penn.) would make a jump shot. Unfortunately, Mount Holyoke would defeat the Blazers 55-46 in their final home contest before the holiday break.
