HOW IT HAPPENED

The contest would begin with both teams holding the other scoreless for three minutes, with Elms seeing a combined four steals by sophomore forward/center Mary Turco (Winthrop, Mass.), senior forward/center Talia Uribe (South Hadley, Mass.), and first year guard Malinna Figueroa (Waterbury, Conn.), until Turco would connect a pass to senior guard Piper Graham (Lancaster, Penn.) for a three-point shot. Seconds later, Wentworth would drive their way down the court, but Uribe would make a third steal and pass the ball to junior forward Tatiana Pereira (Providence, R.I.) for a layup. The Leopards would call a timeout, but the Blazers would continue to control the game when Figueroa would find an open Graham for a second three-point shot. Turco would draw a foul and make both of her free throw attempts. Junior guard/forward Sophia Andrade (Southwick, Mass.) would make a steal, followed by first year guard Sanaii Diaz (Worcester, Mass.) making a pass to first year guard Sam Gomes (Worcester, Mass.) for a three-pointer in her season debut. As WIT looked to create some offensive momentum, Diaz would record a steal and make a breakaway layup to keep the game in Elms favor. Moments later, sophomore guard Gabby Wasiewicz (Worcester, Mass.) would make a three-pointer after receiving a pass from Diaz. The Leopards would continue to try to create a scoring opportunity, but the Blazers would end the first quarter with 18-0, holding Wentworth scoreless. The second quarter would start with both teams trading possession, but Uribe would draw a foul and make both of her free throws. As the quarter would continue, Pereira, first year guard Aniah Glover (West Haven, Conn.), and Gomes would each make a steal, and first year forward Zuleily Lopez (Worcester, Mass.) would make a pair of blocks, but WIT would score an unanswered six points, until a tip-in by Graham would extend the Elms lead. As the halftime break neared, the Leopards would add some points to the scoreboard, but the Blazers would continue to maintain their lead, with Andrade making a layup and a three-point shot, to go into the break with a 27-14 lead.

The third quarter would begin by the two teams trading offensive possession, until a steal by Diaz would lead to Turco connecting a pass to Pereira for a jump shot, followed by a steal from senior forward Kelly LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) which would lead to her finding an open Turco to make a layup. As the quarter would continue, Wentworth would continue to add points to their side of the scoreboard, but Elms would continue to hold on to their lead, with the assistance of a steal and a three-point shot by Diaz, a steal from Gomes that led to a layup by Andrade, a steal by Figueroa, a Graham three-point shot, and a tip-in from Pereira, 41-30. The fourth and final quarter would once again start by both teams with strong defensive performances, with LeBel, junior center Teah McKoy (Hartford, Conn.), and Pereira making a combined four steals, until Andrade would make a layup after receiving a pass from Turco. As the quarter would continue, Gomes would add two steals, Turco would make a layup, a three-pointer from Wasiewicz, and a jump shot by sophomore forward Stephanie Mildner (Moscow, Penn.), to secure the 50-37 home victory over Wentworth.
