CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Soccer team hosted the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in a non-conference game at Leary Field on Saturday afternoon.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 1 | University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth 4
Records: Blazers 1-1-0, 0-0-0 (GNAC) | Corsairs 1-0-1, 0-0-0 (LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blazers found themselves down early 1-0 less than three minutes into the game, but this did not deter the Elms defense. First year goalkeeper Sofia Rivers (Hamilton, Ohio), made some key saves to keep the Blazers within striking distance, but without any support from the Blazers offense, Elms went into halftime down for the first time this year.
Rivers continued to make some great saves for the Blazers in the second half, and the Elms offense finally broke through when junior forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season, assisted by freshman forward Maddie Saunders (North Adams, Mass.). However, in the next possession, the Blazers committed a crucial foul that resulted in a Corsair goal via a penalty kick. Now down 2-1, Elms was aggressive on offense, but could get no momentum, and broke down on defense again, giving up the third goal of the game to the Corsairs. Another defensive lapse in the ensuing possession allowed UMass Dartmouth to score another goal to go up 4-1. Elms could not muster a plethora of shots in the final minutes, and fell 4-1 for their first loss of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-
Basua would score the lone goal for Elms with three additional shots on net.
-
Rivers would save 10 shots of the 14 shots she faced.
-
