Women's Soccer Picks Up 4-2 Win Over Simmons at Home

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Soccer hosted Simmons University for their Elms Athletics Friends and Family Day and a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Leary Field.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 4 | Simmons University 2
Records: Blazers 8-6-1, 5-4-1 (GNAC) | Sharks 3-10-1, 1-8-1 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The two conference foes would begin the contest trading offensive attempts, with Simmons taking the first shot, which would be saved by junior goalkeeper Ramia Santos (Ephrata, Penn.), followed by the opening shot for Elms by senior forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.). Shortly thereafter, McDonough would score the first goal of the contest, after receiving a pass from junior forward Kaylee Little (Boston, Mass.). The Sharks would take a shot of their own to try to equalize the score, but it would hit the crossbar. Then moments later, the Blazers would then score back-to-back goals, with junior forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Calif.) (assisted by senior forward Jordan Lee (Hampden, Mass.)) and Lee (assisted by Little) scoring the goal ahead goals to help Elms gain a 3-0 lead. The Blazers would continue to put offensive pressure against Simmons, with shots coming off of the foot of Basua, McDonough, and first year forward Maddie Saunders (North Adams, Mass.), but the Sharks would then score their first goal. But as the clock began to wind down towards the halftime break, the Blazers would continue to put shots on the board, as Saunders, first year midfielder/defender Eva Intrieri (Westerly, R.I.), and first year midfielder Zellia Fanfa (Brunswick, N.Y.) would each take shooting attempts against their foes. Then junior midfielder Lilli Ramos (Springfield, Mass.) would connect a pass to Intrieri and she would score the fourth and final goal for Elms and would help the Blazers earn a 4-1 lead going into the halftime break.

As the second half began, the Sharks would come out of the break looking for an opportunity to get themselves back into the game, taking multiple shots early in the half, with Santos recording a save during that time frame. As the half continued, Elms would see shots from McDononough and junior defender Macy Figlewski (Meriden, Conn.). Then Simmons would find a gap and score their second goal of the contest during the 79th minute. Even with the Sharks adding a second goal, the Blazers would add on final shots from McDonough and junior defender McKenna Moore (Hartford, Conn.), and Elms would walk away with the 4-2 conference victory.
