Field Hockey Lose a Tough Battle to Anna Maria
PAXTON, Mass. - The Elms College Field Hockey team traveled to Anna Maria College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 1 | Anna Maria College 8
Records: Blazers 0-3, 0-0 (GNAC) | AMCats 1-2, 0-0 (MASCAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blazers started off down 1-0 early, but that did not deter Elms from being aggressive on offense. Senior forward Kaitlyn Lynes (South Hadley, Mass.) and senior defender Elizabeth Franzoni (Rutland, Vt.) both put shots on goal, and even though Elms was not successful in scoring, they continued to threaten in the offensive end of the field. In the second period, Anna Maria would score three more goals to go up 4-0, putting the game further out of reach for Elms. However, sophomore forward/defender Rose Lewinski (South Hadley, Mass.) would score for Elms to give the Blazers their first goal of the season, and cut into the Anna Maria lead. Senior goaltender Katelyn Volk (Warwick, R.I.) would make eight saves in the half, but Elms could not gain momentum off of the goal and captialize on their defensive attmepts, as the Amcats scored two more goals to go up 6-1 at half.
To begin the second half, first year goaltender Ashlyn Cullity (Wilmington, Mass.) would come into the game and make some good saves for the Blazers. Even though Anna Maria would score two more goals in the second half, the Blazers played much better in the third and fourth quarters, even blanking the Amcats in the fourth. Even though Elms was not able to score again and lost 8-1, their hard play and good defense gave them some momentum to take into their next game.
