HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dean offense would take control early, after scoring the first goal of the game in the opening minute of play. The Blazers responded shortly thereafter with four shots from first year midfielder Zellia Fanfa (Brunswick, N.Y.), three saves by junior goalkeeper Marisa LaRocque (Agawam, Mass.), and a shot from junior midfielder Rachel Dort (Chicopee, Mass.), but the Bulldogs would score a second goal and have a 2-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The second quarter would begin with a shot by senior midfielder Jackie Cronin (Smithtown, N.Y.) in the first minute, followed by a shot from sophomore attack Amanda Reed (Somers, Conn.), but Dean would add a third goal to their lead. LaRocque would make two more saves before their conference foes would score a fourth goal. As the second quarter would continue, Cronin, Dort, and Fanfa would record a combined seven shots, and LaRocque would make a save, but the Bulldogs would score a goal and go into the halftime break with a 5-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Dean would look to continue to keep the momentum in their favor by scoring two goals, but the Blazers would get on the board after Dort would score her first goal of the game. As the quarter would continue, the two intrastate rivals would trade possession, with Elms adding shots by Dort and senior attack Katherine Ingram (Chicopee, Mass.), until Cronin would find the back of the net with an up-goal. In the final minutes of the third quarter, Cronin would take a shot and LaRocque would record two saves, but the Bulldogs would control the scoreboard with a 7-2 lead. Then in the fourth quarter, the two teams would continue to put pressure on each other's defense, with LaRocque adding three saves in the quarter and three shots by Dort and Cronin in the opening minutes. Moments later, Cronin would score her second goal of the game, followed by another shot by Dort, then back-to-back goals from Reed and Dort. As the game would begin to wind down to its final minutes, the two conference rivals would continue to battle, seeing both teams score, including a third goal by Cronin, along with three additional shots by herself.
