Women's Lacrosse Loses a Tough Battle to Vermont State-Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Elms College Women's Lacrosse team traveled to Vermont State University-Castleton for a non-conference game on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first quarter would start with Vermont State-Castleton taking the early advantage, by scoring three quick goals, but Elms would see two draw control victories by senior midfielder Jackie Cronin (Smithtown, N.Y.) and a shot from junior defender/attack Shea Barron (Wallingford, Conn.). Then Cronin would win a third draw control that would lead to a goal by senior attack Katherine Ingram (Chicopee, Mass.) for the first goal for the Blazers. As the quarter would continue, junior goalkeeper Marisa LaRocque (Agawam, Mass.) would make four saves, followed by free position goals by junior midfielder Rachel Dort (Chicopee, Mass.) and Cronin, along with a shot from sophomore attack Lily Sheridan (Ashby, Mass.), but the Spartans would add a goal to end the first quarter with a 4-3 lead. The second quarter would see VTSU-Castleton score quickly, Elms would respond shortly thereafter with Dort recording a draw control and two shots, along with a shot by Cronin, but the Spartans would add another goal to extend their lead. As the quarter would continue, Cronin would add a draw control and Dort would take a shot, but then Cronin would connect a pass to Sheridan to score an up-goal, followed by two quick goals from Barron, assisted by Dort, and Cronin. LaRocque would make a save but Vermont State-Castleton would go into the halftime break scoring five goals, to bring the score to 11-6.

The Blazers would come out the gate looking to narrow the deficit, with Cronin taking a shot in the opening minute, but the Spartans would be the first to capitalize scoring moments later. LaRocque would make two saves, but VTSU-Castleton would continue to add to their lead further. Then as the quarter would continue, LaRocque would make a save that would lead to Dort scoring a goal. As the third quarter would head to its final minutes, LaRocque would add a save and two goals would be scored by Cronin and Sheridan, assisted by Corbin, but the Spartans would keep their lead 14-9. The fourth and final quarter would begin with another goal from Vermont State-Castleton, but the Elms offense would continue their efforts, with sophomore attack Amanda Reed (Suffield, Conn.) recording a shot, a save from LaRocque, and a goal by Dort. As the quarter would continue, LaRocque would make three saves, Cronin would score a goal and a shot, and Sheridan would win a draw control, but the Spartans would score three more goals and defeat the Blazers 19-11.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cronin would score four goals, with two assists, seven shots, six ground balls, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers, she would also record her 200th career point.

  • Dort recorded three goals, with an assist, six shots, four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers.

  • LaRocque would make 15 saves of the 34 shots she faced, with seven ground balls and a caused turnover.

  • Sheridan would add two goals, with three shots, and a draw control.
