Women's Lacrosse Faces St. Joseph, Conn. in Conference Play

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Elms College Women's Lacrosse team traveled to University of Saint Joseph, Conn. for a conference game on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first quarter would begin with St. Joseph taking the first shot of the game, which junior goalkeeper Marisa LaRocque (Agawam, Mass.) would make the save, but the Blue Jays would score the first goal of the game. Senior midfielder Jackie Cronin (Smithtown, N.Y.) would earn a draw control, LaRocque would make a second save, junior midfielder Rachel Dort (Chicopee, Mass.) would take the first shot for Elms. Then shortly thereafter, Dort would tie the game, 1-1, with a free-position goal, but then USJ would quickly score to regain the lead. As the first quarter would continue, LaRocque would make three saves, Dort and Cronin would take a combined three shots, but the Blue Jays would hold on to the 2-1 lead at the end of the opening quarter. St. Joseph would once again begin the quarter with a quick goal, but LaRocque would make a save that would lead to Cronin scoring her first goal of the game. The Blue Jays would then score two quick goals, but the Blazers would not be deterred, as Cronin would in another draw control that would lead to Dort scoring her second goal of the game, followed by a draw control win for junior defender/attack Shea Barron (Wallingford, Conn.) and LaRocque would make three saves. But in the final minutes of the opening half, USJ would score six more goals to go into the halftime break with an 11-3 lead.

Cronin would start the third quarter by winning the opening draw and LaRocque would save the first shot that came her way, but the Blue Jays would continue to keep the momentum of the game in their favor by scoring their twelfth and thirteenth goals of the game. LaRocque would add a save and then the Elms offense would drive their way down the field where Cronin would find an open senior attack Katherine Ingram (Chicopee, Mass.) for an up-goal. As the quarter would continue, Cronin would win another draw control and LaRocque would make five saves, but USJ would close out the quarter with two goals and take a 15-4 lead. In the fourth quarter, LaRocque would start with a big save that would lead to three-straight goals by Dort, Cronin, and Barron, to bring the score to 15-7. However, the Blue Jays would continue to extend their lead further by scoring four goals. In the remainder of the quarter, LaRocque would add  a save, Dort would score a goal, and additional shots would come from Ingram, first year attack Chloe Sullivan (Hampden, Mass..), but St. Joseph would win the conference game, 19-8, over Elms.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Dort would score four goals, with six shots, a ground ball, and a draw control.

  • Cronin would score two goals, with two assists, four shots, two ground balls, five draw controls, and four caused turnovers.

  • LaRocque would make 17 saves of the 36 shots she would face, with a ground ball and a caused turnover.

  • Ingram would add a goal, an assist, with two shots and a ground ball.

  • Barron would record a goal, with a shot, three ground balls, and a draw control.

  • Sheridan would add two ground balls and a caused turnover. 

  • Maffuccio would record a ground ball.

  • Olsen would cause a turnover.

  • Sullivan would take a shot.
