Men's Soccer Bests Mitchell College, 2-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Gerard Lawler (Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia) scored what proved to be the game-winner just four minutes into play as the Blazers posted a 2-0 win over Mitchell College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms improves to 2-5 overall, 1-1 in NECC play, while Mitchell moves to 3-4 on the season, 1-1 in NECC action.

Elms netted its early first goal when sophomore midfielder Josh DiNoto (Branford, Conn.) played a corner kick service to the head of sophomore defender Anthony Nitri (Feeding Hills, Mass.) who headed the ball to the foot of Lawler who came into the middle and fired the ball into the right corner of the net giving the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.

The sides played even soccer for much of the contest as both teams finished with 10 shots in the game with Elms earning a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Blazers scored their second goal of the contest when sophomore forward Joelle Reyes (San Salvador, El Salvador) connected a brilliant through ball to junior forward Adam O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) who then chipped the ball past the keeper and played it into the empty net at the 84:08 mark to seal the 2-0 victory.

"Overall it was a great team effort against a very good team," said head coach Chris Streeter. "We kept our composure and it was nice to be able to put the ball in the back of the net."

Lawler and freshman forward Lorenzo Rolocut (Somers, Conn.) added two shots on goal each, while freshman goalkeeper Nicholson Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) earned a save in the victory, playing the first 45 minutes between the pipes for Elms.

Blazers' freshman goalkeeper Christian Kostka (Oxford, Conn.) saw the next 41:43 in goal and made two saves, while freshman John Matrisciano (West Haven, Conn.) played the final 3:17 to help preserve the win.

Mitchell net-minder Ramazan Sinani (Waterbury, Conn.) was solid for the Mariners, making five saves in the losing effort.

Elms is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 3 when it hosts Suffolk University at 4:00 p.m. in non-conference action at Leary Field.
