BROOKLINE, Mass. – Elms College freshman goalkeepers Nicholson Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) and Christian Kostka (Oxford, Conn.) combined for three saves, while Newbury College net-minder Jeremy Bergeron (Fitchburg, Mass.) notched four of the Nighthawks' six saves as the sides battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Hedley Field in Brookline, Mass.
With the tie, Elms moves to 5-5-2 overall, 1-1-1 in NECC play, while Newbury moves to 4-8-2 on the season, 1-2-1 in conference action.
In a game that was tightly contested throughout, Elms had its best shot to break the scoreless deadlock in the second half as freshman forward Gerard Lawler (Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia) blasted two shots that were saved by Bergeron, while freshman defender Joe Pellegrini (Somers, Conn.) and junior forward Adam O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) notched a shot on goal each but were denied.
With just 56 seconds remaining in regulation, Adam O'Grady attempted one final shot but the ball missed wide of the mark, setting up the first period of extra time.
In the first stanza of overtime, neither team placed a ball on target, while Nighthawks' goalkeeper Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) made a save on an offering by Adam O'Grady at the 106:41 mark to keep the game even at 0-0.
Elms' sophomore midfielder Josh DiNoto (Branford, Conn.) had the final shot of the contest but the ball sailed high.
Lawler and Adam O'Grady led the Blazers with two shots on goal each, while Newbury received one shot on target each from Milton Ricaurte (Central Falls, R.I.), Steven Serpa (Central Falls, R.I.) and Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, R.I.).
Elms returns to NECC action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when it travels to Southern Vermont College for a 4:00 p.m. contest with the Mountaineers.
